About the Designer

TommyL was born from the vibrant fashion scene of Montreal in the late 70's and 80's. In those days, the city was a hub of disco fever , musical dancing, and with fashionable women donning stylish clothes that left everyone mesmerized.

Montreal was a melting pot of cultures, and ....the French , Italian and Jewish  influence on fashion was undeniable. The city was a global hotspot for cabaret, nightclubs, hotels, and of course, shopping on the famous St. Catherine and Sherbrooke street.

Designer stores were mushrooming all over, and the fashion boutiques were teeming with people.Chabanel Street was ABSOLUTELY booming and the likes of many fashion houses had their creative influence from a great pool of fashion conscious minds.

The renowned Crescent Street in particular, was like a fashion runway, with the sidewalks filled with stylish women flaunting their outfits day and night. The corner of Crescent St. and St. Catherine area was the perfect a mix of bars, food, dancing, and high-profile shopping spots. It was here that Tommy Larocque, the founder of TommyL, first began experimenting with fashion.

Tommy had a particular knack for modifying and sewing his clothes to make them stand out. His wide bell bottoms made from old flared drapes was something unheard of for a population of Urban Irish /Scottish area (NDG).

Tommy's display of flaunting ,wearing or dressing with this style teetered on the verge of " unethical ". The general mentality in MTL was mostly that all men dressed a certain way (baggy pants and not tight). It eventually changed and the trend became normal for men to be more fitted. Contrary to the norm of Levis and Lee jeans, but just before the Jordache, (Buffalo) David Britton,Sergio Valente, and CK  trend, Tommy was always experimenting with jumpsuits and anything different and he could be found searching the second hand stores in Westmount and Outremont. Turns out style hasn't changed much and all men now adopted and still adopt a tighter Euro look.

Tommy was not content with just wearing the latest fashions. He wanted to change things up and create something new, something that would stand out from the crowd. He wondered "why stores didn't offer more colors of ....off beiges, light blues and .....changing  the stitchings  of black base  and red combinations or different stitching options". He wanted to make jackets livelier and collars more exciting...Hence.

Thereto, voila, TommyL was born, a brand that combines the vibrant energy of Montreal's fashion scene with Tommy's unique vision. Today, TommyL is known for its innovative designs, high-quality materials, and attention to detail. From stylish jackets with the premise to be body fitted , TommyL has something for everyone.

The idea behind the whole concept is to ideally provide a service to allow the client the flexibility (1)to be creative with their outfit (b) walk the client thru the process of choosing trendy soft butter leather (c) creatively play with the stitching (d)change the style slightly (e)add  or delete pockets (f)change the fur and use materials the client would perceive as " their personality and style "  with the mindset of  : " its unique and tailors the garment to the figure and body shape of the client ".
